Wedding Florals for over 20 years!

Hello, I'm Angela Sauers, the owner and designer at Adorn! It's amazing to think that I've been in this industry for over 20 years! It's definitely one of the toughest businesses to succeed in, but if you persevere, the outcomes are stunning!

This is Mary and Matt! I had the honor of providing them with their florals and worked with them on the design and decor! Their wedding was in South haven MI at the maritime museum. The results were stunning as you can see here. I was thrilled how everything turned out but of course there are always bumps! Let's go through the steps of how putting together a wedding like this looks just in the days preceding.

Step #1 Flowers arrive three to 4 days prior the event in boxes having to be individually cleaned, cut and hydrated. So please imagine every stem you see at the entire wedding in bouquets, centerpieces, ceremony arches so on and so forth, usually over 1000 blooms being handled. Not to mention we have to check our stock for, flowers that came in the wrong shade, are smaller than usual, damage or just plain does not look good and then get find more! This process takes at least an entire day, so now were probably at 3 days out prior to the event.

One thing no one's realizes is we are working with the weather and mother nature, and this effects the flowers we hand pick for your big day. If it's too cold in May the peonies might not be as big or in abundance. Thant being said the cute vase you envisioned of 5 large blooms on the guest tables will need some extra fluff! You see you can have flowers that also don't open like they should, wilt for no reason or sometimes just don't come and we having to make fast improvisions. One reason I will no longer guarantee and flower, what we have now is a wish list. Yes, I have learned through my 20 years!!

Step # 2 three days until your wedding! Now time to prep centerpieces and I like to start with any arrangements going directly in water. Mary and Matts wedding had 50 small vases, 3 per each guest table intertwined with candles. This day we will also soak floral foam, worked out the mechanics for any designs not in a vase or one that needs foam support! Large arrangements will also need support from chicken wire or fencing. So yep! we get to cut that into the sizes we need and it's not fun and takes time! Some other things to be done would be some wiring of ribbon or leaves for boutonnieres and corsages, heading out to a local flower farm to get replacement stock or even just to hand pick some flowers! The peonies in Mary's bouquet came from a Holland MI grower I've used for years!

Side Note: We brought in a lot of decor rentals for this wedding, all the candles and candle holders, napkins, placemats. A service we provide is handling all the decorations so couples can relax!

Step#3 Two days out! Okay on this day we are working on all the arrangements, flowers to wear, some of the larger pieces, and for me for Mary & Matts I had to gear up and workout some installation logistics of a hanging eucalyptus piece over the dance floor. I had one last trip to the venue to inspect the area where we will be creating the 10'x10' chandelier. My assistant designer and I will be starting the construction from scratch the Friday before the wedding!

Day #4 1 day out!!! On this day all flowers will be completed and packed for the delivery the next morning. Depending on where were going and if were doing installation will determine how early we leave. As well as how many displays will be designed on site and the size of them. OfCourse, we need to finish the chandelier and get that hung.

The day of the event has arrived! We loaded up and reached the venue promptly at 9am. I had a team of four that day to arrange all the pre-prepared flowers, decorate the head table with flowers, greenery, and candles, and complete the broken arch for the ceremony. I must mention that for any outdoor floral arrangements, the sun and heat can be challenging for both us and the flowers. Mary and Matt's wedding had picture-perfect weather! It was 80 degrees with barely a breeze! Although we prepared these arches, we baked in the sun while adding the final flowers. We transported them, set them up, and carried heavy buckets of flowers to the back of the museum to the dock.

Side note: Many venues won't allow entry that early in the morning. Our setup took around 7 hours! If you want large floral displays, select a venue that permits vendors to enter at 9am or 10am, or be prepared to pay extra for assistance or early access. I know! I don't like it either!
